Palm Cockatoo -drumming

Image Code: Palm Cockatoo MRW_6940

Probosciger aterrimus  Our largest and oldest cockatoo species, the Palm Cockatoo is found only on Cape York Peninsular in Australia.  A specialised nestuing habitat and low breeding success rate (they one egg every second year) have made these cockies vunerable to habitat fisturbance caused by bauxite mining and altered fire regimes.  The male drums on the side of a likely nest hollow, it is thought to attract a mate.
