Western Tarsier

Image Code: Western Tarsier MRW_1911

Cephalopachus bancanus borneanus  This borneo sub-species can live in both primary and secondary forests, and in forests along the coasts or on the edge of plantations.  A carnivorous primate it sleeps alone during the day and feeds on insects and small vertabrates during the night.

Due to the rapid loss of habitat due to forest conversion, oil palm plantations, fire and logging (the species is also collected for the illegal pet trade and can suffer from the use of agricultural pesticides) it is listed as VUNERABLE in the IUCN Red List. It is protected by law in Indonesia and in Malaysia.
